5 Things Residents Can Share That Save Thousands

Sharing is the new owning

In Norway, we buy a lot — but use it little. An average Norwegian household owns equipment they use less than 10 hours per year. What if neighbors just shared?

1. Parking spots

Many housing co-ops have fewer spots than apartments. But those who have them don't always use them. Let your neighbor use your spot while you're on vacation — you earn from it, and they stop searching.

Save: 500–2,000 NOK/month for the renter

2. Tools

Drill, circular saw, pressure washer, ladder, screwdriver sets. Most people own these — but use them maybe 5 hours a year. One shared tool shed can replace 30 individual purchases.

Save: 3,000–10,000 NOK per household

3. Cargo bike / trailer

Perfect for grocery runs, IKEA trips, or picking up packages. Costs 20,000–40,000 NOK to buy. Much better to share among 30 neighbors.

Save: 18,000–38,000 NOK per household

4. Party equipment

Party tent, speakers, projector, extra chairs, grill equipment. Used maybe 3-4 times a year — perfect for sharing.

Save: 2,000–5,000 NOK per household

5. Sports equipment

Skis (especially for growing kids), kayak, SUP board, tent, fishing rods. Seasonal equipment that takes space and costs a lot.

Save: 5,000–15,000 NOK per household

Total savings potential: 28,000–65,000 NOK per household per year

How to get started?

  1. Bring it up at the next board meeting
  2. Ask residents what they're willing to share (use a simple survey)
  3. Set up Booking Map with the most popular resources
  4. Start small — 3-5 things is enough to get going
  5. Expand as people see the value

With Booking Map, setup takes 5 minutes per resource. Residents book from their phone, and the board has full oversight.
